The Open Door Project: Renewing Our Spiritual Home

INTRODUCTION

This spring we are launching our long-awaited capital campaign: The Open Door Project! Our Goal for the Open Door Project is to raise $1,113,000. Achieving this goal will allow us to address a number of the core priorities our congregation has identified throughout our shared discernment process:

  • Space and capacity for our common life to continue and expand
  • Accessibility, safety and comfort for all
  • Welcome of children and growing together at all ages
  • Care of Creation
  • Service to the wider community

These core priorities emerged from our parish-wide Wondering Conversations in early 2017, and have continued have resurfaced throughout our months of discernment, exploration and study. Read more about the Wondering Conversations here!

The Open Door Project will allow us to renew our spiritual home and live more fully into our mission in all of these ways. Read on to find out how!

CORE PRIORITY 1:  Space to worship, play, eat, learn, and make stuff together; capacity for growth of our programs and ministries

How we’ll do it…

  • Nave renovation to enhance the beauty and safety of this beloved space
  • New seating in Nave to allow quick re-configuration of space from worship to coffee hour, a shared meal, or even open space for a labyrinth walk, movement class, etc.
  • Gathering Area and Kitchen both expanded; Kitchen renovated and reorganized
  • Lower level & loft made more accessible with elevator, enabling fuller use of all our space and fuller participation in ministries that use those areas
  • Parish Center renovated and re-integrated into our parish life, with upper level available for meetings, events, community gatherings, etc.
  • Storage reorganized to serve our needs better

CORE PRIORITY 2:  Accessibility, in terms of safety, comfort, and welcome

How we’ll do it…

  • ADA-accessible, gender-neutral single-seat restrooms on the main floor, each equipped with a changing table
  • Push-button main door for easy entry
  • Elevator making all three levels of our building fully accessible. Read more about why an elevator is important here!
  • Address acoustic challenges that make the Meeting Room hard to use
  • Paved areas outside church will improve access to grounds for those with mobility challenges
  • Mix of seating in nave – some padded chairs with arms for those who need extra comfort and support
  • More parking near main entrance to church

Challenge Goal: If our campaign exceeds our primary goal, we may be able to install air conditioning in the nave, for greater comfort on the hottest Sundays.

CORE PRIORITY 3: Welcome and full inclusion of children and youth; growing together as an intergenerational household of faith

How we’ll do it…

  • Larger, more flexible classroom spaces, including a classroom configured to also accommodate adult or intergenerational small group meetings
  • Large youth room in Parish Center, furnished to meet their needs
  • Changing tables in both main level bathrooms
  • Better-organized storage for materials used in children’s and intergenerational ministry
  • Improved signage so members and guests can find where they’re going and what they need

CORE PRIORITY 4: Stewardship of creation and enhanced connection with our grounds

How we’ll do it…

  • New doors, paved patios and pathways will improve access to the grounds for easier indoor/outdoor worship, formation, and play
  • Updating the sliding glass doors in the nave will mean we lose less heat when it’s cold, and can open them more easily for fresh air when it’s warm
  • Repairing the parking lot, which is unsightly and unsafe
  • Reworking our stormwater system, to mitigate chronic flooding and erosion problems on our property, and reduce our ecological footprint by minimizing runoff
  • Challenge Goal: If our campaign exceeds our primary goal, we may be able to replace our parking lot instead of simply repairing it. This would save both funds and resources, since a replacement will be needed within the next decade.

CORE PRIORITY 5: Serving Our Wider Community

How we’ll do it…

  • By offering space to community gatherings and events, art projects, and more. St. Dunstan’s receives requests several times a year to host various kinds of community groups, events and services. In recent years, we have had little space to offer.  The Open Door Project will mean we can say Yes to more of those possibilities, and truly be a resource for our neighborhood. .
  • By setting aside a portion of the funds we raise as a Community Project Fund. Read more about this idea on the Community Project Fund page!
  • Challenge Goal: If our campaign exceeds our primary goal, we may be able to commit up to $100,000 to the Community Project Fund.

In the weeks to come, every household belonging to our church will be invited to consider making a pledge to this campaign, to be paid over the next three years. We hope you’ll choose to be part of of the Open Door Project!
