Early May: Exterior concrete patio work begins.
Mudjacking the old slabs, which have sunk somewhat; building the new patio behind the gathering area – making outdoors more accessible for folks with mobility challenges; also installing a new paved path to the side door of the nave, and a new bike rack on that side.
Mid-to-late May: Elevator pit demo begins.
The elevator will go where current coat room is – the only place where it can reach all three levels. On the lower level, it takes up the vestment closet (not used) and back corner of the library classroom. A new tower will be built for the elevator to rise to the choir loft level.
Late May: New pews arrive from England.
Watch for opportunities to come help unbox them, and for a dance to celebrate how easily we’ll be able to open up the nave! We are still working on finding the ideal armchair – that search got slowed down for reasons beyond our control, but we will keep some of the existing chairs in the meantime.
Early June: Nave floor is refinished.
The paint will be ground off and the floor will be polished concrete, as it seems to have been when the Nave was first built.
Mid-June: Lower level classrooms and elevator tower; Parish Center renovation.
Work begins on joining the two small lower level classrooms into one larger room, and on building the elevator tower. The extensive renovation of the Parish Center will also begin in June and conclude by September, so the youth groups can start their new season in their own new space!
June/July/August: Nave improvements.
Floor refinishing (the paint will be removed; we will have a polished concrete floor, as the nave did when it was first built), sliding glass doors reconditioned, stairwell and loft railing safety improvements.
We expect to be able to worship in the Nave every Sunday throughout this process.
Early July: Main Floor Kitchen & Bathrooms
Demolition and construction begin on main floor bathrooms and kitchen. This is expected to take about six weeks. We’ll figure out a way to have simple coffee hours for a season. Lower-level bathrooms will remain usable. (If we really need a Port-A-Potty, we’ll get one!)
September/October: Front entrance work; Carpet & paint
The front entrance work includes adding our new push-button accessible front doors, and rearranging the Gathering Area to accommodate elevator access (including new coat racks).
New carpet & paint throughout the main building will also be done in the fall (done at the end of the project so that construction does not soil or damage the new stuff).
ALL SHOULD BE FINISHED by November 22 at the very latest, but if all goes well, it could be several weeks sooner!
